Sprint car transmission8/10/2023 I promised myself to (A) take to the track last during the hot-laps session, (B) run conservatively, and (C) not pass anybody for any reason. All of which I figured was a nice way of saying "Please don't wreck my car!" His speech struck caution into my heart. Soon after we met, Engstrom relayed the story about how he had purchased his car used (for $18,000 with spare engine, trailer, and a truckload of spares), how that amount was most everything he had in the bank so he had to sell one of the engines to have enough to race. Perris' hard-working PR guy, Doug Stokes, played matchmaker between Lightning Sprint racer Hal Engstrom and me. In order to gain such huge exposure, these companies-manufacturers, chassis builders, race teams-are willing to take a risk that we might try to knock down a concrete wall with their race car. When we test a race car, the vehicle usually is owned by a business eager to reach the millions of adults who pick up each issue of Motor Trend. Midgets have a lot more horsepower, but Lightning Sprints have wings so lap times on the shortest ovals are similar. The big difference between Midgets and Lightning Sprints is that a Midget powerplant can cost upward of $25,000 that's about 10 times more than a Lightning Sprint engine, or more than a complete, brand-new, ready-to-race Lightning Sprint, including engine and trailer. Though Lightning Sprint frames tend to be constructed with slightly thinner steel tubes, it's not unheard of for a Lightning Sprint to be converted into a Midget-or a Midget into a Lighting Sprint. The chassis are, with minor exceptions, identical to Midget frames: With a powerplant and drivetrain change, and removal of its wings, many Lighting Sprints would be eligible to run a United States Auto Club Midget Division event. They boast the identical suspension arrangement-solid axles and four torsion bars-found on full-size Sprint cars and Midgets. Bert Sprint Transmission The new Bert Sprint Transmission assembly weighs less than 36 lbs, including 6-1/2 flywheels, bellhousing, starter, transmission. Make no mistake, these little cars (called "mini-sprints" in other parts of the country) are full-on, kick-your-tail, snap-your-neck, rut-hookin', hard-crashin' race cars.
